Baby's Got The Blues
CD Reviews & Feedback

The Good, The Bad and The Not-Quite-So-Pretty*

A BIG thank you to all the djs and writers that have taken the time to send in their
 comments, emails, and playlists,
and of course for playing the cd in the first place.
And thanks also to their listeners for listening!

The majority of the following comments have been posted for us to our radio distributor's site. (see our "Hear Music" page for their link...)
Unfortunately, most of the emails we had received directly in 05 & 06 that contained charts and playlists were lost when our hard drive crashed.
We had planned to post them here as well, but procrastinated until it was too late.... Is that a lesson, or what!

2008-7-22
Thank you for sending the CD*. We have played some tracks in our Radio Show " Miles and More, Jazz vom Feinsten! " played every 4 Weeks on Radio Ostfriesland. Further did we put your CD into the internal archive of Radio Ostfrieland, so that other sending Formats on Radio Ostfriesland also can take part of your Music. Thank you for helping us to do a Radio Show with good Jazz Music. We don`t earn Money with our Show and have to buy all the Musik ourself, so we are very thankful for helping us! Greetings from North-West Germany sending Heiko Rocker and Ralf Cramer.
Heiko Rocker, Miles and more, 94.0 FM - Radio Ostfriesland, Aurich, Germany

*Ae aren't sure which of our 2 cds; there has been some overlap. But we haven't started a page for "Are You Ready" yet. It's that old procrastination thing again.

Received cd* two weeks ago and it is getting regular exposure on my show. Good cd and I especially like the title track. After a few more weeksplay I will do a 20 minute feature on the cd. Thanks Bill Sharpe (host of Cool Jazz On The Coast, weekend jazz radio show)
Bill Sharpe, CKSJ Coast101.1 FM  - St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada
*Again, we weren't sure which of our 2 cds he meant since we sent him both at the same time but in separate packages. We decided to keep his feedback here (at least for now) because a) we haven't started a page for "Are You Ready" yet. And b) we do know that he played the title track of BGTB)

This cd is a wonderful mix of blues and jazz that is fitting into many different shows here at the station. In fact the jazz programers have pretty much put claim to it. It's a very clean and well produced cd that offers plenty of versatility and tons of talent. Thank you so much for getting us this quality piece of work to share with our listeners here in Lincoln, Nebraska.  I tip my hat not only to the artists for creating such a fine cd. But to RDX for distributing music of this caliber. Without this service we may never have known of Blues Element here in the heartland. Thanks again. Al Lundy at KZUM Lincoln.

Hi, thanks for sending a copy of your album "Baby's Got The Blues". Loved Jamie's vocals particularly - a great jazzy voice. Outstanding tracks for me were "Crazy Man Blues" and "There Was A Time" - and I'll play one of these at least on my next programme (23rd October). There was probably too much B3 organ playing for my taste, but loved the guitar and percussion. The piano on "So Much To Learn" was great. Best wishes,
Alan Anderton, BCB 106.6 FM - Bradford, West Yorkshire, U.K.

Dear Friends, several weeks ago I received a copy of your latest album and I now want to thank you so much for sending it to me. I hope you will excuse me for not replying sooner but, due to all my musical activities here, I am always a little slow in writing. "Baby's Got The Blues" is a very good album, it is subtle and pleasant, event thanks to the excellent arrangements and that superb voice of Jamie Browning. In fact I immediately started playing it in my radio show of American roots based music at Radio Voce Spazio and did it several times then, as you can see from the alleged playlists. Please stay in touch and do not hesitate to inform me about your future plans. I look forward to hearing you soon and thank you again so much for your kind attention.Yours,
Massimo Ferro, Radio Voce Spazio

My personal comments would include that I wasn't that turned on by this disc. There's nothing on this that I would play on my program. More jazz than blues.

BUENO.

A four musicians canadian band leaded by the suggestive velvety Jamie Browning’s voice, who gives us her musical style with a great temperament and good taste. All songs are Jamie own compositions  where she has given her own intimistic style, a mixture of jazz, pop, groove alternative rock, folk and r&b. Alec Fraser has done an excellent recording and final production, as well as bass playing in some tracks. All ‘Blues Element’ band musicians have done a good work to make everything sound right, compact and teamed, The result is a personal very ambitious serious work. Let’s hope it is only the beginning of a long musical career of  this band who deserve a great success. VERY GOOD.

Good album! Though there not only pure blues tunes, but rock, R&B items in general it can be listened as a good modern blues album. It should be also noted that one can easily to recognize that the musicians are the representatives of Canada or at least not from the Delta. But anyway it is very interesting. One can find excellent guitar solos as well as Hammond B3 organs pleasant sounds. One can even try to find some jazz shades.... Good vocal and instrumentation. I listend to it many times and airplayed. Some of the tunes even were put in the play list in the evening part of the program... Thank you! I'll try to find another album of the artists.

Blues, jazz and other variants are to be heard on this CD. The singer has a good voice, nevertheless, is a little bit too well-behaved for the bluesier pieces sometimes. Good album!

This is a very good cd. Personally I love all the songs. We did some airplay the last week, and results were good. In the meantime our music director will put the numbers in our playlists. My personal comments: personally, I didn't find anything exciting about the album, it does not sound like someone who came from Blues roots or a Blues background. I passed the CD on to the Jazz and Blues program director at Radio 88 FM (Israel), and I'm sure she puts it in her playlist from time to time.
Eli Marcus, Radio 88 FM (Israel Broadcast Authority) - Tel Aviv, Israel

As indicated on the playlists already sent to you, I have been including tracks from Blues Element's "Baby's Got The Blues" in my programme, with more to come. It is an interesting album, as it is refreshing to hear the style of blues singing that Jamie Browning provides - not a raucous, hoarse sound, as is often associated with female blues singers, but a more melodic singing style, full of subtleties and nuances. The songs are strong, backing complementing the vocals and with good variety, and all in all it is an album well worth listening to.

2005-10-5
I have already given my comments for this album of Blues Element. I did it in Popjablues 777. This time I choose "Not thinking of you" because it's catchy chorus. Special is the organ voice in this song and before the organ solo in the middle of the song there is a surprising bridge in the melody. The tension in the voice of singer Jamie Browning makes the song more exciting. Greetings,
Jan Nederveen, Radio Heerde - Netherlands

2005-10-4
My Personal comments are that the band is a very solid and atmospheric, with hot guitar, Hammond organ and very snappy drumming. A very talented group of accomplished musicians. However, for my personal taste Jamie is too gentle a singer for the blues, but sounds more at home on country-style track 6, You Have My Love.
Ron Burnett, Evening Press - York, U.K.

Great sound and all original material, very impressive, very classy. Baby’s Got The Blues has been played on all three programs and stations.
Steve Morgan, BAY FM
100.3 Brisbane, Beau FM 101.5 Beaudesert and 101 FM 101.1 - Logan City, Australia

2005-10-1
Baby's Got the Blues is an excellent release, I enjoy the B3 organ groove, the tight interplay of the guitars, the strong contemporary blues songs and the blues/jazz vocals of Jamie Browning. Favourite tracks are Baby's Got The Blues, C'mon, Crazy Man Blues, Not Thinking Of You and Hockey Strike Blues. Tracks played on air to date are Baby's Got the Blues and Crazy Man Blues.
David Milne, Huon FM 95.3, TAS - Australia

2005-9-29
Now, there's a lot to be enjoyed here, with some fabulous new songs, great musicianship and an added bonus in the shape of the B3 organ, probably my favourite organ - ooer missus etc. Which is appropriate as a lot of the material would sit nicely on a Dana Gillespie album. Funky blues with lots of double and sometimes single entendres as a quick listen to "Crazy Man Blues" will attest. However, you need to pick and choose as the vocals of Jamie Browning take the same laid back approach to all the songs, which renders some of them flat. When it's good - "Baby's Got The Blues", "Not Thinking Of You", "Crazy Man Blues" etc, then it's a delight. When it fails, it's time for the skip button, with "C'mon" programmed out every time. Overall, though, this is well worth a buy, as you don't hear this style of blues very often nowadays, and it's one I've always enjoyed.
Stuart Hamilton, Zeitgeist / MetalUK / Space Rock (http://www.zeitgeist-scot.co.uk) - U.K.

It's a good and useful Blues album. Baby's got the blues is a favorite one. We use it often on our station.
Harry Boerman, Veluwe FM - Netherlands

Here we have a beautiful album very well performed that would fit in to be distributed on-line. I love it as it is unusual and masterly presented. Congratulations.
Yarden ben Yaakov, Radio and Media Productions - Australia

Jamie Browning's voice is very pleasing with a good depth to it. The tracks are good and well arranged. The tracks I have played so far are Baby's Got The Blues, Its not You, and the track I like best is There Was A Time.
Ray Porter, Jazz Syndicate Radio and Real Love Radio - U.K.

Very entertaining. It may be somewhat lighter in tone than most of the blues I play, but it's well worth playing.
Tom Bingham, WCVF-FM - New York, U.S.A.

2005-9-22
Lots of fun here without the ultra-serious purist blues tag associated. Used as between segments music on my daytime talk show the track 'Hockey Strike Blues'(with appropriate explanations of its Canadian origins) yeilded much amused feedback, it seems Ice Hockey and Australian Rules Football have much in common! Other tracks found their way onto my colleague Barb Kuhl's Saturday Night Blues and Country show. All listenable and very well received.
Don Smith, Radio Port Phillip (3RPP FM) - Australia

Excellent blues voice, great collection of songs. All round positive comments from everyone (including myself) on this CD. When's the next one?
Sheril Berkovitch, 2CX - Australia

Blues Element make great music. I love tracks 5, 7, 8, & 9.
Jim O'Brien, 101 FM - Queensland, Australia

2005-9-17
I have listened to it and I have liked it very much and I believe that it has very good quality, shortly I will present it as innovation in my program of blues.
Josep Palmada Verdier (
redhotblues@hotmail.com), Radio Vilafant - Spain

Excellent blues. I don;t listen to the blues that often but I really enjoy this CD. Perfect blues voice, great timing. My listeners have enjoyed your CD.

Cats and foxes, peacefully sleeping on the border of the night or running through the rhythm of a killing night, fronting the time and the space with calm strenght: these are the animals and the emotions coming out from the album Baby's Got the Blues when you put it on your player and let the music flow through the air. The cat is the vocal treatment by the group BLUES ELEMENT, full of black and white shadings. Fox is the rhythm, provided by a so good drum-bass-guitar interlacement, with an organ-piano base that's the right carpet to express the right refinement and beauty. Good arrangements and so good repertoire to reach our ears and our heart.
Preferred tracks: 1 Baby's Got the Blues - 5 Crazy Man Blues

Blues as blues has to be.
Jac Oerlemans, Countrytrack Radio - Netherlands

2005-9-6
This CD does indeed incorporate some blues elements but has much more to do with a pop album, the female voice adds to this strong impression of hearing pop songs all and all not too bad although sometime a bit too commercial.

Blues Element, oh Yes "that baby has the blues".... Great vocals supported by good instrumental skills and suprising and great variety in tracks make this CD a pleasure to listen to because also some "sweet blues" are picking one up and keep you focused on this fine CD.

Baby's Got the Blues by Blues Element is a wonderful mix of soft Blues and cool Jazz. I would have no hesitation in recommending this album to those who like the Blues/Jazz fusion. I will be including at least one track on the next Blues Connection on Scottish Internet Radio.

This is lovely music. It has a rather sweet southern soul vibe on a few of the tracks, which adds a nice feel to what can be a bland music genre, depending on who's playing it. Jamie's voice is as smooth as a good red wine and is a pleasant feature of this recording. The only time this album descends into murky territory is on track 6 where musically and lyrically it gets a little bit trite for my taste, but that's an otherwise minor criticism of what is an overall fine release. Can't wait to hear some more in the future.

I'm glad to hear the music of BLUES ELEMENT. It is a cd with music perfectly written for Popjablues. The voice of Jamie Browning has a strength and a tension; good for blues songs. The blues is still alive; Blues Element proves that. The songs are constant in a good quality. In the near future I play for sure more of this cd.

*Several people have commented on our decision to include the "Not-Quite-So-Pretty's" here with our reviews and feedback.
We've heard everything from "That's a classy move." to "Are you out of your minds!"
Well, in case you're wondering too, we believe in keeping it real.
We know that not everything can be everyone's cup of tea.
And it also sometimes becomes hard to draw the line between good and bad when the very things that some people complain about are the same things that others find interesting about you..... :)
